Saguaro
In this petite painting of Arizona, the artist was inspired by a road trip through the Four Corners. Seeing saguaro cacti for the first time left a lasting impression on the painter. Note the distant rocky peaks that loom subtly on the horizon, their forms softened by the distance. Standing tall in the midground, saguaro cacti rise like sentinels. The winding curve of a dry arroyo guides the eye from the far-off mountains to the near desert foreground, where blooming cacti offer a burst of eye candy. Their bright red and white blossoms shine with a waxy sheen, almost grinning, and demanding attention. The painting’s oozy, textural style is richly influenced by the Post-Impressionist movement.
