Pozza
During her junior year, Iris immersed herself in a transformative year of study in Florence, guided by her art professor and mentor, Erin Murphy. Miss Murphy, an inspiring teacher, frequently led small groups of students into the Tuscan countryside for immersive field trips. On one such adventure, Iris and three classmates climbed olive trees, gently harvesting ripe olives with small hand rakes.
Two decades later, Iris returned to Florence, spending a week painting in Miss Murphy’s studio, where they reconnected over their shared passion. From a studio high above Florence’s terracotta rooftops, they painted in oils, reminiscing and creating anew while sipping Chianti and eating olives. During this time, Iris completed a trio of Tuscany-inspired landscapes, including a small piece depicting a pozza. In Italian, pozza means puddle—a small, shallow pool of water, often from rain or nestled in a low spot on the ground. Step into one unknowingly, and you’ll soak your boots, yet these puddles are also havens for seasonal bursts of wildflowers.
