A vase of flowers in a new dimension. At first glance, the vibrant blooms may seem familiar, but the botany is composed of marine life-forms thriving in an ethereal underwater garden. This artwork is a maximalist interpretation of Ikebana, the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arranging that translates roughly into “making flowers come alive.” In this arrangement, the flowers are alive: anemones pretend to be glowing fungi and the “flower” in the upper right corner is, in fact, a squid. Layers of reality begin to overlap when we notice that the ceramic vase shares with us a second cephalopod. The flowers and vase are framed by several pounds of thick, black oil paint, scooped directly from the tubes and carved like clay around the centerpiece. Discover the tactile, sensory experience of the original artwork as your hands flow over these deep painted grooves, like waves rolling in a dark ocean.
