La Villa
During her junior year, Iris studied in Florence under her mentor, Professor Erin Murphy, who often led her small class on field trips through Tuscany. On one outing, Iris and her classmates climbed olive trees, collecting olives with hand rakes.
Two decades later, Iris returned to Florence to spend a week painting with Miss Murphy in a studio overlooking the city’s terracotta rooftops. Immersed in the Tuscan landscape, Iris created three landscapes, including this portrayal of a rustic villa. The ancient farmhouse stands amid rich farmland, its stone walls steeped in history and surrounded by fields ripe with life. Slender cypress trees rise alongside the house, while olive trees pepper the surrounding land. In the foreground, wild roses bask in the warm afternoon light, capturing the timeless beauty of Italy’s countryside.
