Havana Highway
In 2018, during a rare and fragile moment when the iron grip on Cuba’s borders eased just enough to let in curious American voyeurs, Iris found herself hurled headlong into a fever dream of time travel. The pastel buildings lined the streets like ghosts of a bygone era, every cracked facade and flaking wall whispering of revolutions past. Classic cars—massive steel beasts from the ’50s—rumbled and roared with improbable vitality, Frankenstein machines kept alive by sheer Cuban willpower.
Salsa spilled from every doorway, and she navigated chaotic streets in a rickety rental, dodging potholes and chickens. Lobster and rum were cheap, all other amenities notably absent; This painting, “Havana Highway” captures the essence of road headed out of town—the sudden drama of pulling over as torrential rain transformed the cracked pavement into a flowing river, a chaotic yet beautiful happening that was over as quickly as it began.
