Georgia’s Ashes
I moved to New Mexico, drawn by two powerful forces: the desert landscape but also the legacy of Georgia O'Keeffe, who called this neighborhood her home. I built my house to face Cerro Pedernal, the distinctive flat-topped mountain about which O'Keeffe famously said, "It is my private mountain. God told me if I painted it enough, I could have it." Her ashes were spread on Pedernal by friends and family when she passed away in 1986; I was just 2 years old.
Foxy and I enjoy watching rainbows and thunderstorms form on the mountain from my bedroom window during monsoon season. I can’t imagine how many more times I might, in my lifetime, try to capture the mystery of this dramatic landmark. The peak's ever-changing beauty captivated O'Keeffe and continues to inspire the many artists who live here.
