Let me tell you a little story behind the making of this painting... While digging through a box of my childhood art in 2018, I found a colored-pencil drawing from third grade, circa 1994. Attached was a legend I had written about the scene, which I had typed out on our IBM electric typewriter (see below).
The story was filled with fearless creativity, my younger self didn't hold back! Look closely and you'll see an orca whale, a salmon, a serpent, a fire-breathing boat, a winged sorceress, narwhals, and a rainbow fish, all in one scene.
The composition had a richness and eccentricity that blew me away. I couldn't believe it was my own idea. Inspired by the art of my 10-year old self, I decided to bring this childhood vision to life with my 35-year-old skills. Thank you mom for laminating this one.
Rediscovering my inner child reminded me of the wild creativity I once had. Let this painting be an invitation for you to revisit your own childhood art if you can find that box in your garage.
